Now I’m not going to name any photographers because we all have our personal opinions and tastes on who we prefer and who has the better quality photos. I think that every photographer has their own strong points and has their own level of quality and knowledge in their skills. Now new models may wonder how do they find the good photographers and how do they go about having a successful encounter and end up with a wonderful portfolio? That’s what I’m here to help with.

1. It’s easy to find a photographer on the grid with a little bit of skill and a low price and it’s natural to be hesitant to go with a photographer that charges a higher rate because then you wonder is it truly worth it. But is it worth it to pay and get a photograph that is lower quality than others? It’s not a bad thing to pay for quality. It takes time to discover those great photograhers out there and you will have to do some searching. So check out the classifieds and places in the search tab for photographers or photography. Teleport to the locations and check out their work, rates, what services they offer and whatnot. Take your time and scout them out. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and tired of doing it so you end up rushing. This is definitely the wrong tact to take. I always suggest to new models and even veteran models to have photographers that they like or end up considering for work later on in a notecard in their inventory listing their name, rates, services, and a note or two on what you particularly liked about that photographer to job your memory later on.

2. Now you may wonder how to have a successful photo shoot. You may think, “Well don’t I just have to show up in the outfit, say what type of pose I want and then have them make the shot? Is there really anymore to it?” The answer to that is there definitely is. It’s always good to have a clear visual and idea of the picture you want in your mind’s eye so you can better be able to describe your vision to the photographer. They are a tool to be used and like any tool they can’t work successfully without being directed on what to do. If you give you them a real and clear idea of what you want you’re going to get it. So be sure to IM the photographer and talk to them about what you want, write it down in a notecard and send it to them  (properly named so they can find it) so they can look back on what you want. I always say, be as descriptive as you possibly can to get your point of view across. You want them to be able to see it as clearly as you do.

3. If you do not like it, change it. Now if you did step two properly then you really shouldn’t have a problem with step three. Now for a quick explanation. You are a paying customer and as they always say, “the customer is always right.” and that’s a motto that most businesspersons tend to follow. So if you gave them some direction and are not satisified and feel that you want a change here and there, ask for it it. But be specific. Don’t just say, “Oh I don’t like this.” What don’t  you like about it? What could be changed? What would you rather be changed? You have the right to get your money’s worth.

4. Select versatile outfits and views of your look. Modeling is about variety and being able to fit any role that is thrown your way in a job so mae sure that when you give your portfolio to a client that they are able to see you in a many number of looks, themes, and styles- basically see you in any role.

5. Be sure that your photograph makes sense and the idea you were going for translates off the page. Why would you be laying down in a swimsuit if you really need to be able to see your body and the design of your outfit? Why would you wear a couture gown with an irrelevant background that doesn’t make any sense. The viewer should be able to see that outfit on themselves and understand what it is trying to convey.

6. Choose your poses carefully. People can usually photoshop anything but a truly bad pose is not something you can smudge away. So take consideration of your prims, how you are looking, and if anything is sticking out. You never want to see your hands going inside your body or clothing.

Well there was a new release recently with vive9 skin and I had to get it. Now when I first heard of vive9 I was a bit skeptical of the look, it took a minute for me to really appreciate the quality and uniqueness of this skin. But after a while I was convinced that I the price was definitely worth it. The pink sweetly turned down lip with a few front teeth showing gives a great innocent look and coupled with some dark, dramatic lashes it just really completes the look. At first I was going to go for a valentine day themed and inspired look in a bit more obvious manner but I decided to play with my inventory and this is what I came up with. I’m moving away from my addiction to red and finding the greatness of pink and all that it can really do for a look!

I was in a budget crisis when suddenly it came to me- why don’t I play around with my inventory and create entirely new looks from what I already owned? It’s a practice I encourage every model to take part in as it’s not only fun but it inspires and awakens your creative senses! In this outfit I wanted to go for something sweet and naughty at the same time. The pink lip and sweetly flowing white corset really balance out the bold and black of the top. At first glance one would think it would be overpowering with so many ruffles but as you truly notice the simplicity of the dress you really get the appreciation for the two totally different pieces complementing one another.

The fashion blogger position is currently an unpaid position. We would like for our bloggers to be blogging for the experience and interest in Second Life’s fashion industry. Designers are usually willing to donate items for blog posts, however, re-using current items you own or buying items may be required in certain situations.

Marketing Position
Requirements:

[x] Previous experience in marketing, sales, and/or advertising.
[x] Good organization, social, and persuasion skills.
[x] Business oriented mind.

[x] Marketing the Monthly Makeover sponsored by ICON Lifestyle Magazine.

The job position of Events Planner is going to be a paid position. It will be paid by a commission basis in most instances, however, there will occasionally be pay handed out for direct jobs within Stylista.

Events Planner
Requirements:

[x] Giving tasks and answering questions of interns.

The Events Planner position is a commission based position. You will be paid upon completion of each event assigned. You will be required to attend all Creative Team meetings held, unless you inform Lindsay Stratten of your absence beforehand.

Photographer Position
Requirements:
[x] Over 30 days old.
[x] Online 3 hours a day, 6 hours on weekends.
[x] Past experience in Second Life photography.
[x] Creative mind and ideas.
[x] Portfolio (Flickr, In-World, etc.)(Please attach URL and/or object attachments to application, any application without a portfolio will not be considered).

[x] Working with Creative Team on photography ideas for runway and photoshoots.
[x] Doing ALL makeover photoshoots.
[x] Doing all advertisement and staff photoshoots.

The Photographer position is mostly commission basis. You will be paid by commission for all your work done with the Creative Team. There will be individual pay for makeover photo shoots, advertisement, and staff photography.

Makeover Stylist
Requirements:
[x] 30 days old.
[x] Online at least 2 hours a day, 5 hours on the weekends.
[x] Fashionable, stylish appearance.
[x] Knowledge of Second Life fashion (stores, brands, blogs, etc.).
[x] Minor styling experience (images of at least 3 outfits you have styled yourself should be attached to application).

Tasks:
[x] Helping Lindsay choose the winner of each Monthly Makeover contest.
[x] Working with clientele on their makeover (shopping, consulting, shape modification, etc.).
[x] Promoting the Monthly Makeover contest.
[x] Working with interns on makeover jobs.

This is an unpaid position, we would like our employees to gain experience in styling through being Makeover Stylists. Eventually Makeover Stylists may be promoted to a regular Stylist position, if interested.

Avoid Armpit Poses

Why: For one they are not elegant and terrible for a runway. Also, your second life pixel generating program has it’s limitations on what it can do to make your avatar appear natural. Creating a high quality pose where the arm is up above the head is near impossible as it distorts the shoulder joint and makes it look completely unnatural. Also the outfits that you wear do not always have the best seams for the under arms so it’s best not to show those during a fashion show. Something to definitely think about when choosing a pose.

Avoid off balance poses

Why: Some poses may look cute but the only problem they have is that they are off balance and make the model look as if they were about to fall over. It makes the audience feel quite uncomfortable and it’s definitely not something you want the viewers to feel when looking at the outfits that you are featuring.

Avoid Overly posy

Why: I always say if you wouldn’t do that in a real photograph on a real runway then why would you do it in second life. There are some generic “model poses” out there that make it seem as if you are working way to hard to be a model and it doesn’t look cute or comfortable. They should feel and look natural to you and your viewers. People shouldn’t think, “Wow that pose looks way too contrived and unrealistic.”

Avoid Irrelevant Poses

Why: Honestly if you can’t tell what you are doing on the runway it distracts the audience from the outfit. They don’t want to look at you and think, “What in the world is she supposed to be doing with that pose?” There are some that look as if  you are flying a plane and I’ve seen dancers use this and it was in a twirling animation. I almost expected the model to fly up like some kind of weird spinner top. Some poses are used for a certain purpose  so try to figure out what that is. I’m sure many of us have seen these and had those moments where we felt as if we were watching a bad train wreck and just wanted to cringe away in horror. I can’t really find a pose for this but go with your gut instincts on that one. If you flinch when you look at it, then leave it alone.

Avoid Poses that cut up your avatar

There are some poses of when you tilt your body or bend over it cuts your avatar’s middle right in half and leaves a very awkward dent. It’s not pretty and mars the beauty of the outfit you’re wearing.You should have clean, natural lines- gentle bends in the sides or where you move. If it distorts your avatar it will distort the outfit you are featuring.

Avoid Overly animated poses

Why: There are regularly photographers at runway shows and they are always trying to take that great shot. It does not look cute or good when your avatar never stops moving long enough for the photographer to get a nice shot. So what happens when everyone in the show has a photo from the runway show on the agency or designer flickr page but you? Doesn’t feel very good. If you decide to go with animated poses- let’s face it, they are cute and can make a routine a bit more interesting- be sure to look for poses that have smooth transitions and a long enough pause between each pose. If it never stops moving you may want to rethink buying it or using it in your runway walk routine.

Below are a few shops where I have found some very nice poses for reasonable prices. There are definitely more out there so you will need to do some hunting on your own but this is a good place and way to get started.

I decided to go a bit for the careless cute chick look and I think it went off pretty well. I had found this wonderful little teal jacket from dela, another of my favorite stores that closely matched the color of the belt to really tie in the color contrasts of the dress and accessories. I’ve been falling more and more in love with the shorter hairstyles as I’m normally one to go for long, down my back type of do’s so this was definitely a change from a normal routine. A messy but stylish short cut really added to the “girly rebellious chick” in me and I loved how it framed my face and elongated my neck by really showing off the jacket.

I decided to add some black boots to tie it all together and found these excellent beauties at SLink for 650 which is a great steal although some would end up disagreeing with me there. I absolutely love boots! They’re cute, sassy, comfortable, wearable, and durable although in second life the last really is a moot point to make but I just loved the buckles along the sides and really wanted to showcase them with the outfit. I decided to top it off with some short fingerless grey gloves- in case I ever decided to enter a biker gang (laughs).

To enter, TP to the Tres Beau main store.  Upstairs you’ll find the box for “Make it Work”.  The box is free to purchase.

All entries must be received by January 29th to be valid.

Rules For Entry:

·        You must use 3 items from the “Make it Work” box.  You may mix & match the items.
·        All 3 items must be visible in some way in the photo.  They do not need to be totally visible but we should be able to see them without a microscope
·        You may use your own Shoes, Hair, Skin, Shape, Jewelry and other accessories.
·        You may use other clothes provided that we still see the 3 items from the “Make it Work” box.
·        You may resize the items in the “Make it Work” box but you may not recolor them.

·        Do not Photoshop your name into the photograph.  It will be removed by the judges before posting.
·        All entries must be sent to Herradura Baar.  She is not a judge – just adds photos to the flickr site

Suggestions on how to win!
We’ve done 3 of these contests and there seems to be some consistencies on who wins the contest and comments from the judges.  Hopefully some of these suggestions will help you to create a winner!
·        Take chances!   Models who have won in the past have gone to great details with creating an image and taking risks with their choice of accessories to add to the photograph.
·        There are 3 outfits in this box – do not feel you need to create a picture using pieces from just one of the outfits.  Mix & match.  We have added outfits with similar colors so they can easily be mixed around to create a brand new outfit.
·        Styling means using some of your stuff too.  As long as we can see 3 items from the outfit we’re fine with whatever else you use.  My motto with styling has always been ‘Think Outside the Box’ – yours should be too!
·        Remember, ultimately you are selling yourself and the outfit you are wearing.  If you’re overwhelmed with background scenery how can we tell if you have a great outfit? Even though we don’t want excessive photoshopping, make sure you crop the photos so you and your outfit is the focus of the photo – not the scenery or the props.

·        January 14th, 2010 – Contest is open!  The entry box is free to all contestants and will be sent out in group notices to all members of Model Workshop and Tres Beau.  Anyone else wanting to enter will need to go to Tres Beau store and pay a small entry fee to purchase the entry box.
·        Janurary 29th, 2010 at 11:59 – All entries must be sent in at this time.
·        February 1st 2010 – Judging opens for contestants.  Judges will be voting in an unbiased manner so that quality of picture is selected and not name of the contestant
·        February 4th 2010 at the 5pm Model Workshop – Finalists will be announced!  Top 10 vote getters will be invited to compete in round #2. (I would highly suggest not tossing out those entry boxes!).
·        February 13th at 9am SL time:  Final round of “Make it Work” held at Tres Beau runway.  Finalists will show off their first outfits and create a new outfit using the remaining parts in the box.  Winner will be based on the votes from the photo contest AND votes from the runway show combined.
